About

The TARDIS seeks to celebrate and explore the creativity of very young children in an experimental learning space, allowing children the time to develop their own thinking, collaborations and self-expression through the arts.

TARDIS

History

The innovative TARDIS Studio opened in September 2007 as an experimental classroom using thinking skills and the arts as a springboard for creative and independent learning. Inspired, in equal measure, by educational approaches from Room 13, Reggio Emilia and Philosophy for Children, the TARDIS builds on our commitment to extending children’s learning through the development of thinking, questioning, imagining enquiring and creating.

Dialogue and Thinking

Dialogue is a major feature of TARDIS work – this is often initiated by the children and frequently touches upon the philosophical; children are encouraged to fine-tune their thinking skills through extended opportunities for creative conversations.

TARDIS

How it works

All children at Chapel Break spend some curriculum time in the TARDIS. Usually children stay for up to a week working on a creative enquiry, children initiate this either individually or in naturally arising collaborative groups. This special element of extended time allows for the full fruition of ideas.  Children come half a class at time – this naturally allows for very high quality work in both TARDIS and back in the classroom.

In addition children may use the TARDIS at lunchtimes, most Wednesday evenings after school, occasional ‘Saturday Studios’ and at all times in negotiation with their class teacher!

Artistic and technical skills are taught as necessary or as the children request them.
